Over the past five decades

Wendell Castle has created furniture works with organic forms in wood, plastic, and metal. An exhibition of his most celebrated pieces is on view at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut through February 20, 2013, and another exhibition at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville runs November 29–February 4, 2013. Two concurrent gallery shows at Barry Friedman Ltd. and Friedman Benda in New York can also be visited until February 9. Here, Castle discusses some of the ideas underpinning his prolific works.


but never really considered furniture as a career. My breakthrough came in graduate school. I was using plywood to make a box with drawers, and my sculpture instructor made a derogatory comment about how I was wasting my time making furniture. It prompted me to think: Why isn’t furniture art? So in 1959 I made Stool Sculpture and never mentioned to my instructor that it could also be a piece of furniture. To test my success—that one couldn’t tell the difference between furniture and sculpture—I entered it in a juried show at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in 1960. It was accepted and exhibited as sculpture. Interestingly, I had the highest price of anything in the show.

Sculptors like Brancusi, Arp, Miró, Henry Moore, and architects like Gaudí influenced the vocabulary I began to use. I wanted to get volume into furniture, which typically didn’t really have volume. I was fortunate because I didn’t have any idea how to make furniture—I kind of invented a new technique that came from the sculpture world where you laminate, by gluing up blocks of wood, and then you carve. I didn’t really know how to make dovetail joints, how to veneer, or how to do parquetry. I didn’t know how to do any of these furniture things— but I knew how to do sculpture things.

When there were group exhibitions, I’d usually get the attention of the press—I was making something peculiar. We were the top people in the 1960s: Wharton Esherick (the elder statesman), Sam Maloof, George Nakashima, and Art Carpenter. But I was very different. Other furniture makers thought I was wasteful, that I was misusing wood. “You let the wood tell you what to do; you let the character of the wood influence the design.†I never felt it should. I thought of wood just like clay—I’d make it do whatever I wanted.

I wanted my work to be considered on an equal basis with fine arts. In the 1960s I thought, if I could just sell a table for $2000—since you could buy a piece of sculpture for $2000—then I’d be up there with the rest of the fine artists. I remember the day I sold a coffee table for $2000, and realized it didn’t mean anything. By virtue of its function, it wouldn’t ever be considered a work of art. I never thought I’d make nonfunctional furniture: I don’t make a chair that’ s impossible to sit in or a cabinet impossible to get anything in. I believe in function, but it’s not the most important part. The form is most important. I like softer forms, some borrowing from nature, but I never wanted to do a literal figure; instead I wanted things to be bit more figurelike.

During the Pop period, color was very important. Initially, in 1968, I tried to paint wooden pieces, but that didn’t give me the surface quality I wanted, like automobile forms and surfaces. The only way to get that would be to go to fiberglass, and to keep the vocabulary simple. The first things I made were the Leotard Table in 1967 and the Molar Chair in 1968. George Beylerian asked me to expand the Molar line into an unlimited edition. But plastics are not pleasant to work with. In 1972, I went back to wood.

The works in the Aldrich show, which are from 1959–79, are valued highly on the secondary market. Right after, I moved to doing more trompe l’oeil wood pieces but realized that anyone can do that. No one else could do what I’m doing with the organic pieces. For instance, with Environment for Contemplation from 1969 or Library Sculpture from 1965—where two chairs hang on a treelike element with a lamp on top and a desk at the back—nobody’s made anything remotely like that. I own that vocabulary.

In my work today, there are real volumes. In December, at Friedman Benda, I’m going to have by far the biggest piece I’ve ever produced: forty-five feet long, and fifteen feet at the tallest part. My vocabulary is certainly organic still, using the same technique from the ’60s, bringing together wood and carving it by hand, but we’re joining the digital age: 3-D printing, laser cutting, a machining robot.

You are Fatima, a middle-aged, middle-class woman in El Nahra, Iraq in 1954. You have met an American woman for the first time in your life, and have come to know her pretty well. But you just cannot understand how she can be happy living according to the American customs she has described to you. Construct Fatima’s argument for why the customs of Iraq, especially as they relate to gender roles and gender relationships, are vastly superior to those of the United States.

As the next exam appears on the horizon, I thought I would contribute a little more insight into how to write an essay exam. Although most people in both classes dis very well, some did not. From reading the exams with problems, I am not certain whether their authors just blew off the exam, or whether they simply had no experience with take-home exams.

The point of a take-home exam is twofold. First, it reduces freakout caused by time pressure. Second, it allows students to consider more interesting and significant questions and their implications, and to produce more complicated and complex responses. Thus, students are far more likely to understand the material than they would if they simply had to fill in bubbles on a multiple choice exam. I loathe multiple choice exams, and I never give them. But many people do, primarily because they are much easier and faster to grade, so many students get used to them.

The goals of take-home exams are completeness and complexity, NOT brevity. I want detail. I want students to explain and explore ways in which phenomena are related. I want them to explore alternate interpretations of events, institutions, and behaviors. From time to time a student will tell me that s/he doesn’t have time to write an essay exam. And more frequently I hear from a student that s/he “doesn’t learn that way,†or simply that s/he is not “used to†essay exams. If someone does not have time to write essays, that person should not be enrolled in university classes. I think the popularization of “alternate ways of learning†has done a terrible disservice to students. While there is certainly legitimacy to the position that different styles of learning exist, that does not provide a free pass to people who want a university education in the contemporary United States. When it comes to writing, everyone can learn to write reasonably well, and that’s enough for any class I teach.

So for the next exam, make sure you answer each part of each question carefully and completely, with plenty of concrete, specific detail to illustrate and support the points you make. After you’ve written an answer, go back to the question and reread it. Then reread your answer and make sure you haven’t left any part unanswered. The goal is completeness, not thrift, though there ought to be a high proportion of content to words. Don’t restate the questions, but do number them. And make sure you cite your sources.

By the way: the “Brahmin problem” refers to the problem of toop many unmarried high status women. It was first described by British ciuviul servants in India, where they noticed that although the highest caste men could marry slightl;y lower status women, the highest caste women could not marry below their own subcaste. Since some of the men of their own subcaste had married slightly lowwr subcaste women, that left a number of high caste (Brahmin) women unmarried. People in El Nahra are not HIndu, obviously, but the same basic problem exists there.

And one more thing: When you answer the question that begins “You are Fatima….” it does not refer to the character in Guests of the Sheiok who is named Fatima. The name was just chosen because it is a very common Iraqui women’s name.

     In Saudi Arabia, When young or adult man wants to get married, he needs to talk to his parents and specially his  mom. After that, the mother chooses a girl that she thinks will be the right girl. The girl could be from the family or anyone that the man’s mom knows. On the other hand, the girl that have been chosen could see the man’s picture and talk to his sisters about him. Than she can see him once, and than they get engaged. After the engagement, there is  period at which they can know each other more. Sometime the engagement  period can be for months or year, but no longer than tow years. In this time, he can visit her, but he can’t take her to go out with him. Also he could have her number and talk to her whenever he wants to know her more. the girls also could call him and know what he likes and what he dislike to see what their common things are. However, If he or she doesn’t like the author person, he/she can tell her/his parents, and than the parents can end the engagement. Then it will start all over again with another girl. But if they like each other, they get married after the engagement period. That how some people get married in Saudi Arabia, and it also depend on the family and how open they are.


      In contrast to Saudi Arabia, the couple in the U.S. know each other before they get engaged. They may meet each other from school, friends, work, or online websites. when he/she found someone that he/she likes, they may date for months, or even years.They also may move in together to see how their future life looks like. Than they decide whather they want to stay with each others or not. The man has to buy a range to ask the women to marry him. Different from Saudi Arabia, in the U.S. he/she chooses when they want to get married and how long they want the engagement  period. he/ she isn’t supposed to tell his/her parents about everything in their dating period. On this time, they could go out together, travel together, and understand each other more. The parents meet her/his boyfriend/girlfriend when they are dating, but they won’t decide for them who they have to be with. When they are planning to get married, they just have to tell her/his parents to gave them some advice about the married or the wadding. It’s quite different between the families,but that is what couple usually do when they want to get married and while they are dating in the United States.


    It’s clear that there are a lot of differences between dating in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, but it’s not clear which way is right or wrong. In this case I believe that life will bring what is right from family, daily life, or school. Someday you will find who you will end your life with.
